this has probably been discussed before but i'm having a hard time finding a simple fix:
what do i need to do to be able to preview .psd/.tga files in the file viewer(explorer) of vista 64-bit?
Breakneck: Oh, I didn't realise that. You might try Thumbplug TGA and see if that works, but I'm afraid it wont. It doesn't expressly mention Vista, and in the comments someone mentioned that it doesnt work for windows xp Pro (x64), so it's a slim chance. It's opensource though, so someone might have created a vista64-compatible build?
Chai, are we talking about the same thing? I think we mean thumbnail previews within Windows folders. Or maybe ACDSee installs the right thing for this? Can't remember.

Ah sorry, was replying to mightpea's post.
Though ACDSee comes with its own image explorer which I use to view thumbnail previews.
Create a shortcut on desktop and name it as "windows explorer (32 bit)"
1) Right click on desktop
2) click on >New> Shortcut
3) type in the path without quotes "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\explorer.exe /separate"
4) navigate to photo folder which contains psd photo
Ok, I get this PM from someone with 0 posts on the forum, and am kind of lost as to the translation of what this means:
Hi !
For thumbnails preview psd in vista 64-bit
Create a shortcut on desktop and name it as "windows explorer (32 bit)"
1) Right click on desktop
2) click on >New> Shortcut
3) type in the path without quotes "C:WindowsSysWOW64explorer.exe /separate"
4) navigate to photo folder which contains psd files
be sure to do the psicon.dll trick before !
Can anyone decipher this, or tell me in better English exactly what to do? Or if this would even work? What is this psicon.dll trick?
Here is what i use. Read the post and follow the instructions. Don this is what the guy was trying to tell you but you dont knwo where it begins so its tough to understand. It works for me so enjoy...
Question for acdsee users, has anyone found a way to view .dds textures in acdsee? I have no idea why this still hasn't been included in their latest release of their now bloated unusable image viewer.
another question. is there a program i could use that shows images and i can also check out their RGB values? I have to have either PS or max open for that, and id like a program which is obviously simpler/quicker

Here's how to enable the 32 bit version of Windows Explorer on 64 bit systems, from Microsoft's website, scroll down a bit to where it says "workaround" for the instructions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895561
This should let you use all the thumbnail viewing utilities that don't work with the 64 bit version of windows explorer, as well as some right click shell extensions too.
hyrumark: well shit, this works!!
i installed: http://www.uproar-interactive.com/tools.html
then follow the work around and works like a charm.
Only bad thing is that you have to generate a run command each time.
i will try to make a short cut on my desktop for this! <-- if anyone could help me with this that would be awesome.
Control Panel icons
To work around the issue of the Control Panel icons, follow these steps. This workaround lets you open an x86 Control Panel item when the program icon is not displayed in the View x86 Control Panel Icons item in Control Panel.
Click Start, click Run, type the following in the Open box, and then click OK:
Drive_Letter:windowssyswow64control.exe file_name.cpl
Note The placeholder Drive_Letter represents the drive where the x64-based version of Windows is installed. The placeholder file_name represents the name of the x86 Control Panel item that you want to open.
I honestly don't understand what "the x86 Control Panel item that you want to open" means.
I haven't tried the Uproar app...it works for Vista 64?
well son of a bitch!!! a big thumbs up really! I've been using a stoopid hack with a modified shortcut which worked about 20% of the time. This works perfect so far!!!
version 1.2 didn't work for me in Vista 64 Ultimate, but your 1.3 update
works great! (tried to send emails to both the email in your readme.txt
and the one from your website and both bounced, by the way).
Thanks a lot man, I was looking for something like this ever since I got Vista.
The only thing I would appreciate is, if there would be some way to discern between tga and psd thumbnails, since in my case identical looking versions of these usually sit in the same directory.

I second this. Or if this is too difficult to implement, then an option to disable certain file types from showing thumbs. I usually am very familiar with the various .psd and don't need to see their thumbs.

Tga, psd and png thumbnails.
For quick image viewing: Xnview, Irfanview or ACDSee (the latter of which isn't free, and has gotten to be quite bloated, I believe)
doesnt seem to work w/ vista 64-bit. i tried to install anyways but no luck. any other options?
It's based on thumbplug tga, but ads a few formats. Since it's done by a tech artist at a company, maybe they also got it to run on 64-bits windows?
Good luck with it! It's such a timesaver to be able to see thumbnails for these formats
Surprisingly I'm using Acdsee 2.42 (that's 9 years old) on my vista 64bit, and it previews everything still fine
You can get the old version, from oldversion.com :

This is what you want - http://www.garagegames.com/blogs/36126/14593
Just drag the color picker anywhere on the desktop and it will grab that color.

Sweet! Was looking for something like this quite a while back with no success. Thanks
i will let you know if it works on XP 64
It does for me, that's one of the things that makes it so awesome
Glad you guys like For sure let me know if XP 64 works or not (I suspect it will).
Also - I'm updating it with more formats and stability fixes periodically (there was a locking bug in XP now fixed for example)

Been looking for this feature since i installed vista x64, really miss it lol
Uninstalled, and did the x64, got the same error as everyone else.
It's pretty ridiculous that Vista doesn't have this by default. ><
Hi everyone.
Sorry about the install problem. x64 setup was using the x86 D3DX library which caused a registration fault.
Please download the v1.5 and try again. Should be all ok now.
Let me know if you have further problems. I know how frustrating it is to not have any thumbs

Might take some time getting used to the fact I can now see .psd's previews in the browser window. A luxury you could say!
The only thing I would appreciate is, if there would be some way to discern between tga and psd thumbnails, since in my case identical looking versions of these usually sit in the same directory.
what's happened in 3 days
can anyone help me get this file, I need to view my psd's
Many thanks in advance
Lock in what way ?
