Intersecting Mesh???

I know intersecting mesh is bad ju ju cause it messes with the z-buffer, however, what if you run into a problem where you can’t connect to objects seamlessly due to the geometry being vastly different, thus screwing up the normals around the intersection. Here is shoulder plate in where I want connect a cylinder to a sphere and keep the geometry reasonable. Does anyone have any good suggestions or info??
