/me downloads his old brush set.
huh.. wow yeah those are old.
I make use of the Nagel series a lot, but the out of the zip naming conventions are really a PITA to remember whats what.
So here's the Nagel brush sets, or the most useful ones from 1-38 renamed to sort by type as well as with their set name descriptor and series number all in the file name, so you can make sens of what you want to load. The names also show in ps's brushset loader dropdown if you put them all in the brushes folder in your PS directory for easier set switching.
EG: FX - Hair and Fur - NagelSeries12
There is also a galaxy stamp set and an older collection of Fogmann's texture brushes in here.
Hey Johnny - most of your brushes use a "texture" setting. It defaults to a gradient in my PS, so the brushes get dozens of horizontal lines running through them, making it unusable. I have to turn off texture, save a new brush preset, then delete the old one. Kind of a hassle. Is there a texture you're using that you haven't supplied?
**EDIT**
NM, the "texture" setting seemed to fix itself once I tried assigning a different texture to it. It seemed to pick the new texture across all the brushes, without having to edit them all. Very strange. Guess my PS spazzed.
To all of those wondering how to use tpl files:
As I recall, that's the extension for tool presets. It allows you to save the colour and blending mode of the brush as well, I believe. As for how to install them, you use them much like you do brushes, but in this case you do it from your tool presets palette, which you'll find to the left of the interface, above your toolbox and below the file/edit/... menus.
edit: I should update the first post, but I have to run!
tool preset is the same as brush but stores a few extra bits such as colour, size, opacity, flow etc. meaning you can have several setups of the same brush dab for different common tasks. you can also make tool presets for smudge and all the other tool types which can be handy.
drop them in the presets\tools folder and they should show up.
Wow, didn't see the replies to this thread. Damn, I didn't know the texture presets didn't save, hadn't considered Photshop wouldn't package them into the abr, seems kinda redundant being able to save a textured brush without it also saving the goddamed texture.
I'll upload the supplementary texture files for those that use them, the stripy one gives the effect of wet paint on an old corrugated cardboard box that made me nostalgic of school art classes.
I noticed the PS CS4 brushes have a lot more going on that the CS3 ones, what other attributes do they have? Seems like the dual brush can subtract from the main brush and other cool things?
I have a bad memory, terrible organisation and a lack of skill in naming anything meaninfully other than 'zoom' or "asdfgasdfasd" , so some may even be the default Photoshop textures, I can't remember, nor can I remember which ones I used on the brushes- I think even the really cheese digital one was used ultra large or small scale - again it's a really shame they're not saved in the abr file!

So I finally got around to organizing my brushes today. It took me about 10 hours but I have everything sorted now and I thought I would share it. There are approximately 170 brushes total.
A lot of the Photoshop Brushes I use are from this thread, Adonihs, MightyPeas, and Racers brushes to name a few. I even have a few brushes I made myself in there. I was actually considering just making all my own brushes, but since there are so many awesome brushes readily available on the internet, why try to re-invent the wheel right?
Anyways, if anyone is looking for a one stop solution to Photoshop brushes this may be helpful.
I also whipped up an image explaining the categories and uses for the brushes. Enjoy!
Example Of Brushes (Notice Category Name appears if you hover over):
Adonihs Brushes Explained: (first 16 Brushes in the Brush set)
[Edit] I have checked these on photoshop cs4 and cs5 (they are fully working). I think they work with all cs versions at least, but can't say for sure.
****Also I have updated the Brushes Today, and posted new examples.
Another way to keep things organized is to save brush families as different ABRs and TPLs. For instance, each colored category you have in that screenshot, could be its own ABR. That way you only append the one you need, when you need it...
I started working this was for the last year or so and its a huge relief. No more monster brush library, and in the end I tend to use my basic set 95% of the time, and only load the special ones (scatters, rakes, and so on) when I really need them. Easier to organize too!
Also a tip : Since ABRs do not depend on alphabetical ordering (TPLs do), you can create separators to split your categories easily. Simply make a 1pix brush called
"
"
and put it anywhere you want. You'll love it hehe.
You can even create fake brushes named like so :
"
RAKES
"
to be used category headers, in order to find what you need more easily.
(wouldnt work too well in stroke preview mode tho hehe)
I have this huge mess of a brush collection that is like double the size of brads, I am thinking about organizing it into multiple smaller sets like pior said because I dont even know which brush does what and I don't even use most of them
hmmm now that I'm sorting out the brushes, I remembered why I didn't bother sorting them when I first got them... this whole abr stuff is horrible to sort.
Pior: Great idea for further Catagorizing! I updated the Brush set with your idea. (see my first post here)
Yozora: Yeah, organizing them is such a pain in the arse. That's why I was avoiding it as well. But I think once you have done it, it will speed things up enough to make it worth your while. Of course, you could always just use the brush set I posted for the time being.
don't forget guys, yuo can cut and paste special characters from wordprocessor or wingdings or whatnot into the names of the tool presets or brushes - i do this so i can easily spot categories by eye and they alphabetize and sort by symbol too. just a thought!
Updated the first post, thanks Brad.
It's also nice to see someone taking what they like from my set and adding to it, I'm glad they're useful to someone!
So I finally got around to organizing my brushes today. It took me about 10 hours but I have everything sorted now and I thought I would share it. There are approximately 170 brushes total.
Wow! That's hardcore!
Have they made any improvements to organising the brushes in CS5?
I was hoping they'd offer any way to group/colour/drag'n drop to organise things, a bit like how you can move/group layers. It seems the only thing they forgot about in CS3 when redesigning a lot of the palette functionality.
Even just having names and an example stroke in the thumbnail, I've got a lot of brushes that look nothing like the 'seed' image used to create the stroke.
BTW MightyPea - I've uploaded 5 packs now- if you wanna update the first post?

Dude you're awesome. I've been trying figure out how to organized my brushes. It's also hard to figure out with brushes are useful. you deserve big props for this.
I've been trying to make a photoshop action that takes the alpha of the image and applies it to the background layer. but the action brakes when it goes to paste the alpha into a mask
What I'm doing is rendering normal and diff (AO) of an object to different images as the object it broken up into sections. I then want all that in one picture. so I've been using the alpha to mask out sections and then stack them. Am i doing this wrong :S
Was planning to go through and create my own brush set this weekend and stumbled upon this thread. Great resource for brushes. I've downloaded most of the brush sets linked here and I'm going to go through and select the best ones for me. Planning for it to be 20-30 brushes or less as I'm trying to keep it to the essentials. If anyone is interested I'll upload the set here in a few days.
@sltrOlsson I'm sorry for your loss, here have some more brushes!
They are the only brushes I'm using right now and they're pretty bad ass. Since you can't tell from preview much, here's a piece that I have textured using them
Yeah, I've stated I don't much care about mix-and-match brush-sets, but since this one is being sold (and still available) I'm not going to add it to the first post. Whether or not you leave them up is entirely up to you, however.
Anyone have good dents and dings brushes they like to share ? Such as shell hits on armor that dont penetrate all the way.
Would also be very useful to me as alphas in zbrush.

Uploaded another few I've made over the past month or so.

another reason why I prefer .tpl is that it does store the relevant texture etc.

I work in a very similar fashion to Racer445 so having things organized does help a lot. If you haven't seen his workflow you should really check it out: http://cg.tutsplus.com/tutorials/3d-art/how-to-hand-paint-convincing-metal-textures/
