I had the same problem before and ended up rotateing the trees in max so that they are fitting in unity terrain. Could be that you also need to import them new and also set them new into your terrain, cant really remember how i got it working.
Heres a little update guys. None of that stuff worked. Rotating, and exporting with the Y being the up and down axis, none of that made a difference, and the effect is always the exact same no matter what. What I did try tho and had some success with was exporting as a .3ds file. I just had to adjust the scale within unity…
