you just want something to view textures on a model? 3d/deep exploration. they update textures automatically, support alphas, support an ass load of file formats (psd, obj and 3ds included), and are shareware. deep replaced 3d ages ago, but i still use it.

You can use "Ultimate Unwrap" to load your model as an obj file, turn the 3d view to be always on top and load your textures.
