Suggestions: Free Model Viewer for a Pure Texturer

I have someone who wants to work with pure texturing. Instead of them having to get full $$ 3d programs just so they can see their work realtime while working in PS, I wanted to see about a free program to give them a choice instead.

Again, something thats very simple, that has a REALTIME update of textures from files. Maybe even as far as accepting photoshop psd to make it easy.

Can import obj or 3ds files.

Also not neccessary, but it could help them with like specular and alpha maps, but a 3D viewpoint that can show different channels of input.

you just want something to view textures on a model? 3d/deep exploration.
they update textures automatically, support alphas, support an ass load of file formats (psd, obj and 3ds included), and are shareware. deep replaced 3d ages ago, but i still use it.

I had always thought that a simple 3d paint plugin for photoshop would be awesome. Sorta like the upcoming Z-App link for Zbrush, or DeepPaint 3D's export to PS option, you can paint on the flat and watch it update the model in real time, or you can freeze the model in place, and paint on its surface..all using the usual PS toolset. Maybe even respecting layers, blend modes & selection sets.

That'd be awesome, and probably worth turning into a commercial product.

You can use "Ultimate Unwrap" to load your model as an obj file, turn the 3d view to be always on top and load your textures. It will auto update your textures when you edit and save them in yout painting programm. For this you can use the demo, if you want to edit the UVs of your model and save a new obj you have to buy it. Here is the link:

I'm with Marine. Been using Deep Exploration for years for all my 3d file transfer/viewing needs.

I also installed this one a while ago while searching for a good .x file viewer (stayed with deep exploration in the end anyway). Nice simple shareware viewer from what I've seen - though I haven't really tested it with textured stuff as far as realtime updates go.

Was wondering if anyone uses SoftImage FTK. Seems like a pretty comprehensive and lightweight model viewer..You will need a dotXSI exporter to use it.

Wings3D works great as a previewer for just diffuse textures in a OpenGL viewport. Supports alpha as well in TGA, but only black or white. Switch to shaded mode, and edit Hole material to be completely transparent. Right click and Refresh image to update.
