For me, starting small was working on handpainted assets. Just needed to focus on low poly modeling and painting to get good results. -

He will have been generating normals from handpainted masks/heightmaps, NOT diffuse maps which are usually shit, as you said. -

Yay, for handpainted stuff! There's some really great variety in scenery, colour and design in that vid. Looks sweet! Would love to explore that. -

What would be the best way to put that sort of information in? Should I just grab a metal texture and blend it in, or is there a method of handpainting it? -
