I don't think mudbox gets the respect it deserves. The first time you try it, its a little intimidating. After that it gets easier each time you work with it. -

The left square is more warm because it is more towards the red spectrum. Warm and cool mean closer to red and closer to blue respectively. -

You can set discrete rotate/translate/scale in the tool settings for each respective tool. Hold j to toggle discrete mode. -

I don't think you're wrong in that respect, Maya is always getting praise for its rigging/animation toolset over other apps.
