I'm trying to use Max's Render to Texture to bake some lighting from a highpoly model into a lowpoly. But I can't stop the highpoly from interfering with the rendering of the map (see pic). Baking Problem What do I need to change to fix this?
Dynamesh likes watertight geo. It even tries to automatically fill in holes. You don't need to delete the unseen geo of the highpoly. In fact, in general it's better practice to fill holes of the highpoly for more predictable baking.
i GUESS ao uses the vertexcolors of the highpoly, and thats why xnormal has a ignore highpolys vertex color option. if you don't turn that on when baking AO you will get a b&w vertexpaint.
Yea there are primarily three 'hand painted' styles: -Diffuse only without highpoly -Diffuse only with highpoly baked in -Diffuse as focus with normal/spec/etc. for additional effects like shadows (Guilty Gear Xrd)
Thats the highpoly atm, i used floaters this time : Thank you for your help, Its really helpful. I think next time i will start with the highpoly, that will make the workflow easier i feel...
You can either project the highpoly detail onto your low-poly within Zbrush or alternatively Bake the maps into your highpoly, save export it into Xnormal and bake vertex colors to your low-poly.
@Baddcog: Thanks for the advice, I tweaked the highpoly model, so that there wouldn't be a gap between the vents. It doesn't look realistic on the highpoly, but it bakes better, and that is what really matters. Here's a render with the new normal map:
where you have the series of small ridges on the highpoly I would put a slope on the lowpoly. So that you're matching the average slope of the highpoly geometry. At the moment you've just got a 90 degree angle there.
Pretty much finished with the highpoly of the falcon for this piece. Just hammering away will get the low poly with normals and AO up soon. Here is a render of the highpoly. Let me know if you have any crits.
Highpoly done! Now for sure^^ I added a bunch of pieces that i didnt block out before. i felt like they were missing... pieces like iron sights etc. Here are all the pieces as Highpolys now
