The only way 2009 works for me if I install polyboost (which I do own) to get things like swift loop, geo poly, paint connect, set flow, Conform Brush and retopo, all things I really miss. That someone was probably me(if not I've said the same/similar things many times). Main benefits: A. Better uv usage. You waste less space having to uv parts of the mesh that are partially/completely occluded, and you can have more continuous uv layouts which are easier to paint on(less uv islands). B. Some good advice, I'll add my 2 bits. With individual models you also have several smaller pieces that can be culled when not within the line of sight, if you have one giant mesh, you have to wait until the whole thing is hidden before it can be dropped. Or more common the mesh disapears because the pivot point is obscured… -

@pior is correct in that it is a common misconception that you need hard edges for uv borders. The rule is you need to split your uvs for hard edges, but the opposite is not true. Thinking about how you plan to use hard edges, and how that will influence your uv layout while creating the model is great advice as well.…
