I think what's more problematic is that the engine might change the order of vertices, and decide they're supposed to be copnnected like this: Which would lead to a huge clusterfuck of broken shapes, inverted normals, zfighting and general ugliness. Zac, Nintendo did exactly that with the latest DS Zelda game. You could find the game rom easily everywhere, but they somehow managed to lock the first railroad track - something you run into after, I think, 10 minutes or so.
