I wish the West had a Arc System Work's equivalent. :s Photorealism is cool, but it's equally as nice seeing developers push stylized visuals to new limits. Lab Zero Games and Studio MDHR are possible contenders, though what makes Arksys special is they're literally getting 3D polygons to match 2D artwork.
I know you're going for accuracy but it's hard to read/see the bent metal of the trigger guard when it's that thin on the model. I would suggest thickening it up just a little bit just so that it reads better in 3d; I imagine at present it is going to virtually disappear at moderate distance. otherwise looking good, well…
I would like to see the final result. I'm moderately certain as to what the issue is. Normal maps do not simulate depth. They simulate the direction at which light bounces off the surface. If you want the player to see the depth then you will need to extrude your shape inward and model the 5 cylinders as separate low polys.
at least its not handy to key the translatechannel for animation, use icon-representation to contrain them to be flexible when you change things. Anyway have you build a rig oder just joints for that model? Make some screenshots. ps: is you already bind your model to your joints you can´t reorient joints.

I used to go overboard. My wife helped me realize that when my eyes hurt from looking at screens too much and I'm perpetually cranky, I really don't learn as much as I could if I was just working 5-8 hours a day at a moderate pace and taking time to eat and walk the dogs.
