I think you guys are looking at a screenshot someone else re-posted. The one before it has normals on the wood turned down, though the lighting is unbuilt.
Quick update, got the wall trimmings done! May revisit it later to damage it a little more but for now, would like to move on to something else in the room. Together:
Well there really isn't anything else to it really. You can adjust the amount of bounces, indirect lighting scale (from the directional light), light colour etc.
I haven't done it in Maya. In Max if it's a strip made of regular quads, then it's just a 1-click tool. Anything else is about 10 clicks to straighten, + relax.

Yeah, I think render booleans will be bakeable in next version of modo (I think curved corners should be, too). But this is something else, really seriously cool.
