Ah, guess I should have clarified in my mini tut: the point of splitting the UVs is to distance them so that the border edges don't land on the same pixel of texture. Give them the same distance you would between any standard UV island.
Well it looks like you've placed your joints wrong, they should be in the middle of the loops. And is it skinned at all or just a smooth bind applied with no modification? http://www.pig-brain.com/tutorials/tut02-01/ That one's a pretty good mini-tut for low poly modeling.

@cptSwing yeah, with mcg a lot of old modifiers got a 2.0 it would definitely be more useful if Lattice were watertight with the option of adding custom knot meshes. @kanga I actually enjoy doing little mini-tut excercises like this. It's very relaxing. :smile:
