Go to the channels palete. Create a new channel - this is an alpha by default. Paste the black and white image into this channel Save the image as a 32 bit TGA -

I use HLSL shaders all the time at work and they're fine. Maya 2008 32-bit with Extension 2, if it's any use to you. -

Sure you have learned that. It's how *.PNG works. It's not some special format, it's just RGBA. 32 bit color. -

I'm running Win7 home premium, but only 32 bit on the iMac - installing 64bit is a pain in the arse until Apple updates bootcamp to support it officially. -

Example image plz. My first assumption about the steps is bit depth. You should export a 16 or 32 bit tiff , hdr, or exr. -

check your image modes i know i lose diff ones when dealing with 8 bit 16 bit and 32 bit color. -

Looks like a bit depth issue. Was the alpha texture input in some sort of hdr format? - 16/32 bits/ channel, exr, hdr, or tiff.
