im pretty sure, since this model is only lightmapped with some sort of cubemapshader on the water

Yes, you can use HLSL and CGFX shaders in Maya's viewport.

I always get terrible results with HLSL and CGFX shaders in maya's viewport -- either from artifacting, preformance or just plain not working correctly. I've written my own and used the ones off Nvidia's website ...

does anyone use them (in maya)? There's not much point since it is so easy to throw assets in Unreal or Marmoset, but it'd be nice to see something a little nicer than a blinn in Maya.

I use HLSL shaders all the time at work and they're fine. Maya 2008 32-bit with Extension 2, if it's any use to you.

I use custom HLSL Shaders at work to approximate our game engine in maya's viewport.

I use CGFX shaders in Maya all the time. I love fiddling around making them myself in Mental Mill, very satisfying.

you'll need to precompute shadows and you won't be able to do post effects, but other than that you can do 'whatever you want'

ah, sick. yeah the no post effects thing is a womp womp ... but getting an approximation of the engine's shader work is pretty awesome. I'll have to goof with it more. I'm sure it was probably heavy user error. Thanks dudes!
