Japanese games for sure use a lot of standard Japanese symbology -- water as a symbol for death (FFX), etc etc I think for Western games you can kind of think of the main stuff as symbols for jingoist macho posturing.

I don't know.. I keep my Bend/FFD/Shell/QuadChamfer/??? modifiers around for ages. It'd be hard to do without (though I guess one needs to let go of the past at some point, yeah? ;) )
You cant use 2d chars in battle scenes like FF7 onwards. Also 3d = more animations usually and different costumes etc. with low dev/resource cost. And the little 3d chars are just too cute!
eyes are too high up on all of them just take some actors mug shots and base your heads off them, will save you a lot of time faffing around with original heads from your imagination.

Supercard DS ONE, R4, and CycloDS are the best as far as compatibility and features. The Supercard ONE and the CycloDS both have a save state feature that is AMAZING on games like FF3 and Phantom Hourglass. I'd highly recommend either just for that.
