Good advice above. Also what helps me is to visit concept art sites and save off images that speak to me in some way... whether it's the subject, or the lighting, or the colours, or the shapes. Is there anything new and cool in Substance Painter?
I use mostly Designer and old version of 3d coat to paint mask for it. For some reason what I get in Painter is always a tad bit blurrier and less pixel-to-pixel accurate.
