The Snap Preview Radius and Snap Radius have different values than max 6. This is what can cause the difference in snapping. The snap strength in 3dsmax 4/5/6 is 8 instead of 20. Try changing your Radius values to 18/8 instead of 30/20 playing with those values and the others in the snap options tab might get you closer… -

Ahh 3D printing... that changes things quite a bit. That depends if the mesh needs to be water tight or not. By that I mean one continuous mesh with no holes. This is where Maya excels and 3dsMax sucks big fat dick. The models have to match perfectly in order to save and apply the skin directly. Now that doesn't mean it isn't possible.
