ah, how do i relax a selection? Right click > relax uvs doesnt seem to be working at all. not a huge fan of these mapping tools. 3DS max is very streamlined and to the point.
Relax it a bit, try the "relax tool" it's a brush, then use straighten UVs command when it's gotten closer to straight. Alternatively, use a planar projection from the correct projection axis.
Errr, try changing the Relax UV's settings, I think the defaults are stupid ones. Maya's Relax UV works better and faster than UVHelp when the settings are right.
that is fine but i feal like some of the outer UVs need some balancing this will likely stretch a lot in some areas. what i usually do is relax it a bit, straighten and relax again, then straighten until i have something that looks balanced
I usually use as few seams as possible. Relax the islands. Then I add more cuts as needed to fix distorting areas, and relax again. You'll get a better feeling for it with time and experience.
I don't know XSI, but I'd hazard a guess that if you could relax the UVs on all the meshes at the same time, the relax algorithm would auto-resize all the texels to the same size.
I suggest this workflow: -select faces -use flatten option -use relax -connect islands if needed -use relax -repeat these steps until model will be unwraped There is no need to "play" with gizmo.
Thanks Soul, I downloaded the trial of Deep UV and relaxed it with that. The UV map in the nose area is much better now. I just need to redo the texture to fit the relaxing now.
TopoRelax is a 3DS Max modifier which relaxes meshes while preserving their volume unlike the normal relax modifier which shrinks the mesh. Get it from here http://www.mariussilaghi.com/toporelax.htm [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewcdnIjeeuw"]TopoRelax 1.0 - YouTube[/ame]
