Yep. Just assign separated materials to the polygons that you want to have different material. Then uv according. Its a fully common practice.

Not really. Loading the OBJ is the easiest way. Practically you can also just combine and merge vertices. And don't forget to delete history.

Awesome! And the term game-art doesn't necessarily mean that the work is within a production, loads of people make game art for portfolio/practices.

Why? There's nothing wrong with that practice and obsessing over "all quads" is a time wasting habit I've watched too many artists fall into.

Well, I don't know how practical they are, but the pointy fingers/nails gauntlets concept is quite common, and would fit the theme of this character.
