Cost of living is also a very important factor that really effects how you view salaries. You may barely be able to live on 45k in one city, but in another you can afford to buy a house with a new theater system on 35k

My thoughts? Buy a simple $100 desk and spend the remaining $450 on an Aeron Miller chair or something similar. If you -really- want the USB ports get a cheap USB hub with a cable, that's maybe $25 together.
Even if you were to make 1 long triangle strip, you'd still only have 254 triangles. Doesn't sound like a feasible amount of polygons for a game. (except maybe Battlezone but that doesn't need normalmaps)
