I tried it just now and you're right. I seem to have misunderstood how bones work with regards to rotation, then- when twisting a bone shouldn't the vertices just.... orbit around the bone? Stay at it. It will help you immensely. No one is good at it the first time that they try. I really think that drawing helps modeling, and vice versa, once you are comfortable drawing.
