If you have access to the pro version then you can use light-probs in combination with lightmaps. The light-probs will act upon all non static elements with good effect. What you could do is make modular pieces with varying "blocks". Each platform could have a different mix of these blocks. This method can apply to both 3d and sprite art. Yeah, I've looked up some tutorials (Including a good one by Chris Albeluhn, whose tutorials have really helped me out thus far) and it seems like you can get some really cool looking effects in UDK with the right shaders. I'm diving in, wish me luck!

Start with the online help. Seriously. it has a whole set of tutorials that will give you as much info as your average "beginning maya user" book will, but you won't have to spend 30-50$ on it. Once you get through the included help tutorials then check out an advanced book in your specialization of choice.
