Have you visited recruitment websites from Blizzard, EA, Ubi, etc? Collecting job ads should give you a very good picture of currently relevant skills. Blizzard also have a page with background info which type of content they would like to see in portfolios for particular positions. -

Typhoons, tornadoes, lightning, volcanoes, etc. It would really suck for them if the earth opened up in a huge earthquake (Blizzard is in California) and swallowed all of Blizzard, with the exception of two guys, then those two guys, (who are now the entire company) get sued by gamers for not supporting their product.… -

as strange as it may sound the editor blizzard made would be pretty good for it. they are betaing custom 3d assets now the same way they get things working. that in combo with the fact that the blizzard editor is very robust seems like a no brainer to me. does require starcraft 2 and also im sure u cant sell ur work.. -

Whilst IMO not necessarily a 'requirement' per se but knowing how too draw will certainly add finesse and polish to your work, also I might add there are many instances of veteran artists at Blizzard and akin studios having 2D proficiency.
