Sounds like your ALT key is stuck somehow. CTRL-ALT-A is select all layers, ALT+[ ] cycle layers. -

You could put it into a layer than freeze the layer.... better to use and engine though like others have suggested. -

For RAM you've got a few options. 1. Buy as much RAM as you want now to fill all the slots, then chuck out the sticks later (p.s. I accept leftover RAM donations :P ) when you want to add more. 2.
