I'm with mojo on the old days of dr. who. I liked having an old guy in tacky clothing going around eating jelly bellys and saving people. It just felt so out there that it was fun.
it's a sorting order problem. copy the one in front and delete the old one. that should fix it. or if that dont work, make a copy of the back one and delete the old one. Yeah it's a ghetto solution I know.

Looks great, nice integration of your painting into the screenshot :) At first glance I actually thought the skull was an old tree trunk with a big knot hole. Maybe making the bone whiter will help it stand out as bone and not old wood.
it sounds like a lot of fun, and they seem to be doing something interesting with a series i never bothered with before but will now most likely purchase, which is probably the point. if you like the old ssx then play the old ssx i guess.

well, I suppose you could duplicate the old subtool, and when you bring in the new mesh with goz, since it premasks the new stuff, simply reproject all the old details assuming the changes in the general form arent huge.
