You could use zbrushs 'recreate subdiv' tool to rebuild your lower subdivisions. I tend to create the lowpoly by modifying the base, and optimize the geometry knowing that it doesn't have to be all quads.

Was it built from curves that came from the illustrator file? Pretty sure you can rebuild the curves in the 3d package to have an even distribution of points which'd give you the result your after?

Something humped your master boot record, hard. Had this happen myself a few months back. Look for instructions on using the recovery console to rebuild the MBR, it's not too complicated and it did the trick for me.
