Your last idea, yes that can potentially work. It simulates the outline look but it won't be perfect. And I bet MR wouldn't work well with that solution, even with the black shell set to not cast shadows. Since you're already rendering in layers it might not be a problem. Just did a quick test, can't promise it will work, it looks like it should, but can't say for certain. 2 boxes, put in 1 smoothing group, and set to unlit/flat so only the AO shows . notice how with scanline there are these shadows on the edges wich is caused by the smoothing (that seems logical, maybe it's something… -

Your hard surface modeling skills are prety good. I see a few faceted areas and some edges that will be too hard to bake. There is much more to life then omni lights!! That render is not doing you any good. There's no need to screencap a high poly model. You wont be able to achieve anything close to the level of uberness… -

Normalmap making face dark.
Hi, When i plug a normal map into my arch & design material some faces getting darker then others making them stand out as polygons.
