You've probably got the brush mask selected without a brush mask. Its a green dot under the empty Brush square. -

What I meant was; you turn an nDo layer into a smart object, this enables the user to use vector masks, or layer masks ! -

Brush > Auto Masking > Backface Masking This option is per-brush so you will need to toggle it again if you switch brushes. -
