This doesn't address your issue directly, but Max can import .ai files. You have to save them as Illustrator 8 format though. -

This isn't a good idea with Biped in Max 8. Biped tends to break very easily in Euler mode so I'd stay away from it. -

quick, dumb alpha question....
is there some way to have an alpha plane render both sides in viewport? front is fine...when i rotate around you can't see it. max 8 J.I. style skin shader thanks!!
