Some other test with the composition, I switched to 50mm lens. I like to work with lense from 50 to 85 because you're more in your subject and I feel that here, it's working well, we are more "in" the forest among thoses big trees. Now I have to play with medium scale elements... -

Yeah, totally! iron sights benefit from that for sure. There's elements that don't at all however, like the barrel end + inside the barrel. Precious triangles! -

Just select by element, and then overlay them vertically on top of each other? Thats pretty much what I did as far as UVing goes! -

Re: 3Ds Max Issue with FFD Modifier
Try shift-moving a polygon down away from the model, as Element. Then add FFD. Then delete the polygon. Should allow you to resize the volume. -

Do what Dustin said, if all fails, select Element, select the Mesh, detach it, delete the 'empty' null mesh and keep the detached one. -
