Shading problems while importing to max.

I´m exporting between maya and max, it has worked fine up until now but the model I am currently trying to import to max is freaking out. It´s fine until I try to make it into an editable poly. Once i do that this happens(look at pic). It´s not that I have any history left on the model from maya and the faces are not flipped. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
