Hi! Before doing a likeness sculpt, I believe it could help to make quicker, more low res exercises first, to practice proportions and features. Aside from observing 2d images, you can also drop 3d references into your scene for comparison.
What I'm saying is its not good practice to split that strip into its own separate island. If you were texturing this with trim sheets and tiling textures then sure, but when you're baking onto round things you need to be careful about where seams go. What is this thing? How big is it on screen?
Are you working from photo references? I think the best way to practice is by using generic models which allow you to focus on anatomy.
