One of the level designers at work was having a similar snap problem that he did n't have in max 7, but had in max 8 might be a bug -

I really really didn't like episode 9. Since episode 8, it has started to go downhill. 1-7 are pure genius though. -

has nothing to do with python. go into your scene and hit 8 for for the environment and effects window(or go Rendering -> Environment) and change the ambient colour to black -

http://www.tmhunt.com/pics/techs_mechs/tnt_barrel.jpg depends on the look you want, i used 8 which worked fine for my art style on this project -
