I think I saw that as part of Blender 2.8, that they had a reverse subdivide function, called Decimate Modifier

import you say? you should be using a function called 'load tool'. import is for data exchange formats.

If you want the distance it's just length(positionA - positionB) (assuming length is the right function in maxscript, I forget)
