Yeah I had this exact same problem, I like to hotkey those to pick verts, edges, and faces. 1)set up you hotkeys how you like them. 2)find and edit hotkeysetup.mel (maya2011-scripts-startup folder) 3)you'll see a bunch of entries for x, X, c, C, v, V etc and you need to comment them out by putting "//" without the quotes… -

In 2013 they turned on Gamma/LUT by default which technically gives you lighting closer to what you see in the real world (or some other nonsense) but in reality all it does is jack up normal maps for people who don't care about rendering.
