Just curious from a job standpoint why would you want to stay in KC? That has to be even less of a hub for CG related jobs than Ohio... you're going to have to move eventually anyways. Personally if your parents are supporting you and not forcing you into finding a job right now I'd take full advantage of that. Being able…
Hey everyone, I'm new to 3ds Max 2012 (and generally 3ds Max past 3ds 7) and I'm having serious issues applying textures/bitmaps to selected polygons. I'll select the polygon I want to apply the bitmap to, go into the material editor, make sure both the material slot I want to use and the polygon have the same map channel,…

By "applying noise", do you mean you hit the "Apply to Mesh" button? Noise doesn't require extra geometry to preview, but actually applying it to the mesh would require enough subdivisions to handle the detail. I did IT for a company that used all Macs, I was told later I got the job because all the other applicants where afraid of apple products. I said I never used them but was willing to learn, it was the easiest job I ever had.

A nice tip from the game industry mentor podcasts that I remember was to choose 5 studios you'd love to work for or are actually targeting to apply for and have a portfolio piece based on each one. That would give you 5 portfolio pieces hopefully with some diversity depending on the studios you chose, and a semi-targeted…
The simple answer is to make art. Find someone on ArtStation that has the job you want, and keep making art until your work doesn't look out of place next to theirs. Finish your work. You won't like any of it at first. You'll think you're falling short of your aspirations. That's totally normal. I've been doing this…
