Smart material is essentially a stack of multiple materials, you can't drag and drop it into "material" channel of a fill layer, or a layer. You need to drag and drop the smart material in your layer stack, then if you want to paint / erase, you would do that by using masks. Which is a much more convenient way of working… -

ok I figured out a way to do it. What you want to do is use terrain layer nodes as the mask texture for a lerp between the two materials. One of my colleagues is currently running a whole room full 3d printers around the clock churning out parts for the laser cutter he Kickstarted. Leaving the automatic updates running on those computers was rather destructive. -
