nah your on the right track, blockout basic shapes, put in LP layer duplicate and put in new HP layer model highpoly using LP as starting point remodel or amend LP
Penciled in a lot of details sans shading, and cleaned up the blockout substantially. Once I give this all the proper shading and clothing folds comes color next. UVs need tweaking as well.

i would move the whole thing into maya and keep it as a kind of blockout, but recreate the whole asset with modeling. so you get rid of all the wonkiness in there. that would help the shading and the overall look a lot i would say :)
