I agree that gamers are the smaller percentage when it comes to pc users, but not this small. Using the sales of 1 game in the "simulation" genre is hardly a definitive way to conclude there are only 16 million pc gamers... There is no "1 game" that every pc gamer has and its absurd to think there is... I bet most people…
it´s a pain if you have to do it often (maybe it could be scripted) but you are aware of the option to specify the uv range? i.e. v always 0-1 but u 0-1, 1-2, 2-3 etc!

I always work at 1:1 scale, because of the problems with relax tool and viewing; and at the end I crop texture in photoshop and in 3ds max I use uvw xform mod where I just put 0.5 instead of 1.

Here is a Work in progresss on my Rocks , Those are Cliff Rocks , actually only 3 Rocks ....Rotated and placed in different positions .... polycount is around 1000 polys per rock so may be I can make a lod level at 500 ? Worth it or not? Also I used a tiling of the texture with smart seams positioning on the rock , instead…

i like ctrl 1 for isolation. i think shift 1 also does something similar but i always use ctrl 1. you can also setup layers and turn those you arent working on to reference, but that's a little slower.
