Upping to 512 will definately help brush response, and 5.5 or 6(what i use) will probally run a bit better for you too. -

Use the high pass filter, set it about 24 for a 512 texture, and use a separate layer with a solid color to fix the hue/color. -

the Xoliul works perfect in Maya 2012. what are you using this for model presentation or as a viewer too see things as you work on textures.
