This is because obj export freezes the normals, so the easiest way to fix this problem is to but two normals modifiers on to the mesh and collapse the stack.

yeah normally I would just have exported an obj or fbx, but was a little sleepy this morning and brought in the max file instead.

dont think max knows "single object selection" but you can do for obj in selection do ( scale obj.selectedVerts [0.0,0.0,0.0] )

Have you tried deleting all of your UVs and starting over? You could also try exporting it as an obj and back in.
