The importer would drop alphas if they were 100% black or 100% white, so you would need one pixel of opposite so the alpha was not dropped. You should not get any problems working with an mesh of 100-200k at all on that computer. I myself have a laptop with a dual 1.66 ghz, 2 gb ram and a 512 mb dedicated graphic card.
