You didn't directly mention Maya OBJ in the video, if I understood everything correctly, these should be the correct settings, right ?

Tried exporting it but it didn't give me the option to export as fbx or obj. Just some random file type I have no idea of.

Maybe try exporting as obj and import into a new scene. I get the feeling if that doesn't work your mesh I corrupted somehow.

I came here hunting for answers to this very problem. Fixed it with the Hipoly being an obj set to triangles. Low poly is no triangulated fbx

when i do it that way i end up with a black texture. maybe its not exporting the polypaint with the obj? is there a way of turning that on and off?

google 'decompile tf2 models' that should get you where you want to be, you'll need to convert to an OBJ in order to get it into silo
