Also, one more thing to note: rather than thinking of "I need a split where there is a 90degree corner", it's more that you should think in flat surfaces. So you might even have a UV split on a transition between a flat surface and curved surface with a much lower angle than 90. -

_Erik: Thanks! I haven't done much in terms of hard surface stuff with Zbrush, but I've seen several guys use it for creating panels, various inset surfaces, screws, etc. I'm going to be using Zbrush for hard surface for the first time, so it will be a bit of an adventure. Judd Roy: Thanks, bud! -

I'm not too used to using fur, but wouldn't those clumps leave some hard-looking normals? In some of those shots I see the lighting blending nicely across the surface. But I'm picturing a regular surface with clumps sticking off, not a whole surface with matted down fur + sticky outy clumps. -

What about using the "Normal Align" tool? To snap the star object to the surface of the other object. You could also try using an attachment constraint... or was it called a surface constraint? I forget which one it is... but it sticks the object on the surface and lets you slide it around and rotate it along its local… -

if you feel like you're falling behind, keep a journal so you can see the rate of your progress. You might find that you're actually accomplishing more than you think.
