hah, suddenly the blender interface makes sense. i thought those things were toggle buttons for mesh editing, and not tabbed panels for everything. IMO it'd be more obvious if it was something like this: -

I'm with JKMakowka. Just spend a few minutes in Wings marking charts and seams. Done! The live unfolding in blender looks great, but I just don't have the time to learn the crazy interface. -
Re: edit poly vs. editable poly hotkeys in max
you can go to "customize user interface" and select the "edit poly" group and uncheck active. this will make you keyboard shortcuts stay the same when you add a edit poly modifier. -

Loaded up recently on my Surface Pro, and found that they updated the interface to scale properly with smaller screens. Even on my crappy 10 inch screen everything is perfectly legible.
