still playing around with making him more popeye-ish, but for now I took the model as is and retopoed it for realtime and baked out a few maps, popped it in mamrmoset.

i agree, cool idea, i have been using the fake ao in this release as a mask to lighten the shadowed areas, some realtime implementation of this would be awesome.
There was a program like that before gamemaker that could do realtime 3d. I dont know if it was a vrml creator or what. But it was back from 90-91ish. Any clue?
I feel like running this in a realtime solution such as UDK or CryEngine3 would help this drastically, as it looks like a game environment. And you're right, it certainly has potential!
yes. you would use largely the same math that's used to generate curvature maps, but you'd do it in realtime instead of baking down to a static source (map).
