It is a renderer, a real time renderer. As far as I'm aware, that is it's main purpose, to showcase models in a real time environment without having to set up scenes in Unity or UE4. That's how dDo does it I suppose—I imagine it would flatten the contents of each folder (diff, specular, gloss), then copy the flattened gloss to the alpha of the specular (or whatever—having options is cool).
