I think you will get more responses if you post in 3D art board: http://polycount.com/categories/3d-art-showcase-critiques, making convincing hair is mostly about making good hair content. Hair is discussed a bit in this tutorial though: http://www.marmoset.co/toolbag/learn/character-setup
I see a lot of pro work out there who have these insane closeup renders showcasing an amazing level of intricacy and detail. For a basic simple prop like this one I kept that in mind as I was modeling. To really focus on the little parts and pieces that together makeup a more interesting/complex piece in the end.
Actually I think behance is like the biggest site where you can find commercial art in graphic design / architectural previsualizations or advertising, plus it's backed by Adobe now. I would definitely not call it amateurish, but it might not be ideal to showcase real-time art (you're mostly limited by image size)
Photo-based. You're right about the textures. I have devised a "master lighting" system that's going to take advantage of it, heavily. I'm going to showcase this environment under multiple lighting conditions viewed from every angle. I'm hoping to impress people with what will only use 1MB of memory, for everything!
See this in the Forum Home? The sections have descriptions. Your topic belongs in 3D Showcase, instead of in General Discussion. I'll move it for you. Also, you can embed YouTube here, see: http://polycount.com/discussion/63361/information-about-polycount-new-member-introductions/p1#forum Thanks for posting!

The Nagant M1895 is a seven-shot revolver that has a unique gas seal system, which allows the cylinder to move forward and close the gap between the barrel…

So I am thinking of starting a website to showcase some art, maybe video tutorials etc but am not a web designer or programmer. I have found some free website templates but nothing I like yet. Have any of you made a website for your artwork using templates? Any suggestions where to find some that cater more to the artist…
